Japanese government seeks to gain ability to remotely turn off air conditioners in private homes

Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s Energy Conservation Committee discussed gaining the ability to remotely turn off air conditioners/heaters in private homes earlier this month. The committee believes that Japan is trying to rely on renewable energy sources such as solar energy, whose power generation is affected by the daily climate, making it difficult to provide stable and usable power generation. Household air conditioners account for 30% of household electricity consumption. The purpose of remote-controlled air conditioners is to reduce electricity usage in anticipation of power shortages. Implementing the program is not difficult from a technical point of view. Many modern air conditioners support switching on or off or adjusting temperature settings via the Internet. The government is considering having manufacturers expand the capabilities of connected remote air conditioners to government regulators. This permission is not granted by default, the committee considers that the government can remotely turn off the air conditioner only with the consent of the owner of the air conditioner.
