Google has announced that its Android messaging app, Messages, will begin a public beta of end-to-end encryption for group chats in the coming weeks. Messages is the default short message application of the Android system. Google has been testing end-to-end encryption since 2020, and users will see a lock icon representing encryption in the speech bubble. End-to-end encryption is currently only supported for chats between individual users. But after the public beta is over, group chats will also support end-to-end encryption. Google’s official blog said that SMS text messaging has been 30 years old, and it’s time to move to the next generation of cross-platform messaging service RCS. RCS stands for Rich Communication Services, the communication standard that Google is working hard to promote.
