BYD (002594.SZ) speeds up shipbuilding to go to sea.
Tradewinds, the world’s largest shipping news service organization, recently reported that BYD has signed an order with China Merchants Industry for four 9,400-space dual-fuel car ro-ro ships (PCTC). The car ro-ro ship is a multi-purpose ship that is widely used in vehicle transportation.
The total price of the order is at least 400 million U.S. dollars (about 2.783 billion yuan), and two ships will be built by China Merchants Industry Nanjing Jinling and China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu), and are expected to be delivered successively from 2025.
The dual-fuel vehicle ro-ro ship ordered by BYD will have the largest loading capacity among similar ships in the world. According to data from the Clarkson Research Institute, a shipping market analysis agency, the world’s largest car ro-ro ship was the “Aurora” class car ro-ro ship launched by Norway’s Lenoir Shipping Lines (Hoegh Autoliners), with a designed loading capacity of 9,100 cars.
The Jiemian News reporter called BYD’s Secretary of the Board of Directors on this matter, but as of press time, the call could not be connected.
According to a report from Caixin in October this year, BYD is planning to build its own car transport fleet. Its affiliated company will order 8 ro-ro ships that can carry 7,700 cars at a shipyard in Shandong to cope with the rapid growth of car exports. resulting transportation needs.
The report mentioned that BYD will build 6 car ro-ro ships, and the other 2 ships are option orders. The total cost of shipbuilding orders is close to 5 billion yuan. Option order means that the buyer has the right to choose whether to order the agreed ship at the agreed price within a certain period of time.
If the above two orders land, BYD is expected to become the second domestic auto company with its own fleet. Previously, SAIC operated its own fleet through its subsidiary SAIC Anji Logistics. In January this year, SAIC also placed an order for two 7,600-space car ro-ro ships from Jiangnan Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, to supplement capacity.
Automobile companies have placed orders to build car ro-ro ships, mainly due to factors such as the increase in car exports and the high cost of shipping.
According to the latest data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, in the first ten months of this year, Chinese auto companies exported a total of 2.456 million vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 54.1%. At present, China’s automobile export volume has surpassed that of Germany, becoming the world’s second largest automobile exporter.
The increase in car exports has resulted in an increasing shortage of global car shipping fleet capacity. According to data from Clarksons, as of the end of November this year, the one-year daily rent of a 6,500-space car ro-ro ship rose to US$105,000, the highest level in history. Previously, the one-year daily rent of global car ro-ro ships was as high as US$52,500 in 2008. According to the forecast of the agency, the one-year daily rent of global car ro-ro ships is expected to rise to US$120,000-150,000 in the future.
Rising car ro-ro rents led to an increase in orders for new ships. According to statistics from the China Shipbuilding Industry Association, in the first eight months of this year, 43 new ship orders for car ro-ro ships were traded globally, which has exceeded the entire year of last year and is the highest value since 2008.
Most of these orders were taken by Chinese shipyards. According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, in the first ten months of this year, Chinese shipbuilding companies accounted for 83% of the global orders for ro-ro new ships, ranking first in the world.
