Today is Saint Nicholas’ Day in Western Christian countries. It’s in honor of a 3rd century AD saint – and the inspiration for the modern day Santa Claus. On this day in many countries, children (and adults!) are given small gifts or sweets.

Sweets like those in the paintings of Josefa de Óbidos! !

De Óbidos was a Portuguese painter born in Spain. She has lived in her native Portugal since she was 4 years old, and all her works are done there. Some 150 works of art are attributed to Josefa de Óbidos, making her one of the most prolific Portuguese Baroque artists. In today’s piece, the artist shows a whole host of objects – boxes, jugs, crockery, dish cups, trays and tin cups – as well as various pastries and sweets (yay!), flowers and ribbons Decorative sticks. Ornate fabrics fill the background. Richly detailed and decorative, this painting is characteristic of the Óbidos studio and a favorite of clients.

By the way, this artist created the Santa Claus we all know today. <3
