Edward Mitchell Bannister was the first African-American artist to receive popular acclaim. Working on boats along the Atlantic coast as a young man, the Canadian-born artist eventually settled in Providence, Rhode Island, where he became one of the first faculty members at the Rhode Island School of Design.
Bannister is best known for his pastoral landscapes, inspired by Jean-François Millet and the French Barbizon School, to whom he devoted his later passions—landscapes of the Atlantic Ocean and the Rhode Island coast—to More experimental vision and dramatic painting. “Ocean in Moonlight” is a prime example of the painter’s bold and mature style.
