Today is the last day of our special collaboration with the National Galleries of Scotland , and we’re wrapping up with a classic winter painting. We all know…winter is coming!
Complementary colors of orange and blue enrich the picture, casting shadows of haystacks in the snow. They stand in a field west of Monet’s house in Giverny, where Monet established his famous water lily garden. Monet persuaded local farmers to leave these haystacks in the autumn and relatively mild winter of 1890 so that he could paint a series of works. Combining outdoor and studio work, he created at least 30 haystacks in different light. The lyrical, almost abstract quality of these works influenced many subsequent artists.
