Synopsys’ The Cost of Poor Software Quality in the US: A 2022 Report estimates that software quality issues cost the US $2.4 trillion in 2022. Software quality issues include cyber attacks caused by existing vulnerabilities, intricate problems between software supply chains, and the rapid accumulation of technical debt is becoming more and more influential. Cybercrime losses due to an increase in the number of software vulnerabilities increased by 64% from 2020 to 2021 and may increase by a further 42% in 2022. From 2020 to 2021, the number of failures caused by weaknesses in open source software components increased by 650%.
Technical debt becomes the biggest obstacle to making changes to existing code bases. The report estimates that technical debt has risen to $1.52 trillion this year.
