According to Weibo news, Samsung transferred 98 of its US patents to Huawei last month, covering telecommunications, charging, cameras, displays and other technologies.

According to Korean media The Elec, plus the 81 patents transferred by Samsung in 2019, Samsung has transferred a total of 179 patents to Huawei so far.

Previously, Huawei and Samsung signed a patent cross-licensing agreement, covering standard essential patent technologies such as 5G. Huawei said it has patent cross-licensing agreements with 20 companies, including domestic and foreign companies, and that Samsung is Huawei’s largest licensee among foreign companies in terms of the number of devices sold and the patents covered.

The report pointed out that in cross-licensing agreements, sometimes due to differences in the number and quality of patents, one party pays more license fees than the other party. The patent cross-licensing agreement between Samsung and Huawei mainly involves 5G patents, and Samsung owns fewer patents than Huawei, so it is possible to transfer patents.
