As a native of Shijiazhuang, I made a film that is almost entirely in Wuhan dialect. First of all, I am very interested in dialects personally. I am naturally interested in folk art, opera, and dialects from various places in China. After we decided to shoot in Wuhan, I went to see a large number of local folk art materials in Wuhan, and also found some materials for language programs.
The reason why we can present it so freely is because we have used a large number of local actors in Wuhan: Zhu Yilong, Wu Qian, Zheng Weili, all of them have lived in Wuhan. It was Mr. Luo Jingmin who worked harder. He is from Shaanxi. When I first wrote the script, I imagined the image of Lao Mo as him. I like his image very much, he is the kind of serious, serious and cute feeling. He is also an old artist who is very demanding on himself. It is not easy to take into account whether the standard of Wuhan dialect is not standard while performing, and what he speaks is very standard. But I didn’t study well, I think it’s because I had a period of time in Chongqing. Going to university in Chongqing, I have a little background in Chongqing dialect and Sichuan dialect, but I think it is very difficult to learn Wuhan dialect on this basis, but I can get those interesting points in Wuhan dialect, but I can’t say no it is good.
Then why use dialect? In “Life Events”, we wanted to make the characters more vivid. For example, Zhu Yilong used his hometown dialect to play this role, and he acted like a child who grew up in this land. We have tried to let him act in Mandarin, and we feel that Wuhan dialect can be more liberated from the line performance, and can focus on other aspects of the performance. In addition, part of the realism of fireworks in the film is also established by dialects.
