to shoot as much as possible

Almost everyone can say something about a favorite movie. But what about your favorite short film?

In fact, as long as you are willing to drill into the corners of the movie world, the short film is almost as rich as the feature-length film. There, people are also talking about those short film masterpieces – Chris Marker’s “Dike”, Shantel Ackerman’s “My City”, Agnès Varda’s “Short Angle”. “, Bi Gan’s “Diamond Sutra”, Huang Xinyao’s “Great Buddha” and so on.

For directors, short films can be used as a practice before shooting a feature film, and also as a preview of the concept of a feature film. Young directors Niu Xiaoyu and Wang Erzhuo, who have shared the creative process of their debut feature films in the previous issues of “The Screw Is Tightening”, both talked about the short films “Fish Flower Pond” and “Flower Flower Pond”, which were short films before “Don’t Say Goodbye”, respectively. Goodbye, Paradise’s predecessor, “Mother’s Paradise”, laid the foundation for the shooting of the first feature film.

But short films are becoming more important in a clouded film industry.

In this issue of “The Screws Are Tightening”, the producer Naian said, “I have to admit that in the past few years, especially in the past three years after the epidemic began, my understanding of short film creation and its importance , obviously changed from before.” Under the declining trend of the industry, short films began to stand out as an opportunity for independent creation. Short films require less money and a shorter cycle, and importantly, “it is more tolerant in creation.” She suggested that directors who are hindered in the preparation of feature films should “shoot as much as possible” when there is an opportunity to create short films.

Short film “Things with Feathers”

The young director Xu Tianlin also felt the space given by the limitations of the short film. Her short film “Things with Feathers” won Audience Choice honors in the 4th NOWNESS Talent Program and was also selected for FIRST FRAME at the FIRST Youth Film Festival this summer. After becoming a mother, she shifted from documentaries that needed to run around to feature films. “Things with Feathers” simply follows the hands of its characters, telling the story of an Iranian-Afghan family’s day in Germany with a lightness that would be unimaginable in the genre of feature films. She said in this episode, “Every time I create a new short film, I want to try a form that I haven’t done before.”

The earliest cinematic masterpieces – the Lumiere brothers filming people having snowball fights, the famous “The Train Into the Station”, and Jean Vigo’s “Nice Impressions” and “Zero Points for Conduct” directed by Jean Vigo in the 1930s – press Today’s classification standards are all short films. A hundred years later, the experimental nature and tolerance of the short film itself allow it to retain the excitement of the film’s initial days.

Chinese directors who have tossed and turned in various limitations have gradually discovered that short films are a genre with a high degree of freedom and strong operability, an opportunity for them to break through the gloomy reality. Just like the short film “When I Look at You” directed by Huang Shuli, who was also a guest of “The Screw Is Tightening”, it won the Short Film Queer Palmy Award in Cannes this year and the Best Documentary Short Film in Golden Horse. It is a long-lost encouragement.”

Nai’an said, “I would rather support active and spontaneous short film creation…I don’t want most (creation of short films) because I have to.” In China, supporters of short films are constantly emerging. NOWNESS itself is a platform focusing on short films, and the NOWNESS Talent Program for all creators is in its fourth year, and new directors in the short film field are selected every year. The FIRST FRAME section of the FIRST Youth Film Festival also includes feature films and short films, both of which have Chanel’s long-term support for cinema behind them. And it was in the unit of the NOWNESS Genius Project and the first frame of FIRST FRAME that Naian, Wu Qi and Xu Tianlin’s short film “Things with Feathers” met.

If we zoom in on the scale, we find that the short film has almost become a “world symptom” again. When Chanel released the Advanced Handcrafts series in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, it also supported the Dakar Court Festival, a film festival focusing on local short film creation. If we go to Le Cinema Club, a streaming platform that Chanel continues to support, we will also find that almost half of the screening archives are short films, including writer and director Marguerite Duras’s “The Hand of Veto” and the Berlin Gold Award winner. Bear Award-winning director Carla Simon’s “The Same Afterwards.” Chanel also cooperates with Toronto Film Festival, New York Tribeca Film Festival, Lyon Lumière Film Festival, Rome Villa Medici Film Festival, and Busan International Film Festival to present feature films and short films with unique perspectives.

But in China, channels to watch short films are still scarce. “After our short films are shot, what kind of platform and mechanism they use to meet the audience is still relatively lacking in China and needs to be further improved.” Wu Qi said.

Short film “The Negating Hand”

This episode is the end of the “Screw Tightening” movie feature “Future Film Editorial Department” , and it is also the last episode in 2022. After repeated closures of movie theaters and intermittent stoppages of film production, I hope we can still maintain a normal sense of the film-let film workers shoot normally, and let fans watch movies normally. I hope we can stand out from the encirclement under the inspiration of the spirit of the short film.

Let’s watch more movies together next year!
