TSMC begins mass production of 3nm chips

Liu Deyin, chairman of TSMC, officially announced the mass production of 3-nanometer chips at a ceremony held at the Fab 18 factory in Tainan Science Park. Liu Deyin said that compared with 5nm chips, the logic transistor density of 3nm chips has increased by 60%, and the power consumption has been reduced by 30% to 35%. Higher logic density means smaller transistors can be produced that run faster and consume less power. Liu Deyin said that the market demand for 3nm chips is very strong. TSMC’s Fab 18 is its main base for the production of 5nm and 3nm chips, and the total investment in the facility will reach NT$1.86 trillion (US$60.49 billion).
