South Korean antitrust regulators have fined Tesla 2.85 billion won ($2.2 million) for failing to inform customers that its electric vehicles have a shorter driving range in cold temperatures. Tesla exaggerates the car’s range on a single charge on its official website, and the electric car’s cruising range in cold weather is only 50.5% of its online advertising. Tesla also talked about a series of precautions for driving cars in winter on its official website, but did not mention the shortened mileage. Citizens United for Consumer Sovereignty, a South Korean consumer protection group, said in 2021 that the driving range of electric vehicles will drop by as much as 40% because of the need for batteries to heat the vehicles in cold weather, with the biggest impact on Tesla.
