Messaging application WhatsApp has announced the addition of proxy server support, allowing users to bypass blocking access to WhatsApp through proxy servers. WhatsApp said helping users in blocked areas continue to use the app was the main motivation for developing the feature, citing Iran as an example, saying months of outages were a human rights violation that cut off access to emergency aid. WhatsApp said that after using the proxy server, the communication is still end-to-end encrypted, and neither the man-in-the-middle nor the proxy server nor WhatsApp or Meta can see the content of the user’s communication.
