The happiest job in America is a lumberjack

America’s lumberjacks have some of the happiest and most rewarding jobs on earth. Agriculture, logging and forestry workers have the highest self-reported levels of happiness and the lowest self-reported levels of stress, according to an analysis of the U.S. Department of Labor’s American Time Use Survey. The American Time Use Survey asks to record what is being done at any given moment of the day. The four surveys conducted between 2010 and 2021 also asked some people about the meaning of these activities, or their levels of happiness, sadness, stress, pain and fatigue. Pleasure and meaning are not always related. Healthcare and social workers feel they are doing the most rewarding work, but they are unhappy and stressed. Lumberjacks think they have the happiest and most rewarding work. The most stressed industries include finance and insurance, as well as education and technology, with the most stressful single occupation being lawyers. In general, white-collar workers can be much more stressed than blue-collar workers.
