The well-known American job search website Glassdoor released its list of the 100 best workplaces in the United States in 2023 on Tuesday. Despite the spread of layoffs in Silicon Valley, technology companies still account for more than 40% of the list, and the two names that were common on the list in previous years Failed to make the list: Apple and Meta.
Glassdoor’s annual list recognizes the best of U.S. companies with more than 1,000 employees based on feedback submitted by employees over the past year.
It’s the first time Apple hasn’t made the list since Glassdoor began publishing the list in 2009. Meta has been on the list since 2011 and has held the top spot three times, most recently in 2018. On last year’s list, both Meta and Apple were in the middle of the top 100.
Both Meta and Apple have faced challenges over the past year. Meta has laid off more than 11,000 employees and shifted its focus to the Metaverse field. Glassdoor considers the company’s business prospects, and the change in strategy left employees “a little bit unsure of what to expect.” At the same time, layoffs can also hit morale and cause long-term damage to an employer’s brand.
For Apple, its return-to-office policy may have been the culprit for its drop, based on employee comments. “Employees really value being able to work remotely, or at least hybrid,” said Daniel Zhao of Glassdoor. “We would say that the call for them to return to the office has not been accepted with open arms by employees.”
Alphabet’s Google and Bain & Company are the only two companies currently on the list every year.
This year’s Best Employer is a newcomer to the list: enterprise software company Gainsight. The company builds platforms for customer service, products, and community engagement. In their reviews, employees highlighted the company’s transparent leadership, diversity and inclusion, career opportunities and flexibility — from remote work to unlimited paid time off.
“The tech sector is still the most representative sector on the list. But at the same time, the tech sector has been on a roller coaster ride throughout 2022,” said Daniel Zhao, chief economist at Glassdoor. “This is a good reminder that companies that rely on old methods may fail halfway, while new companies often rise in times of crisis.”
