Mercedes-Benz has become the first automaker to offer certified Level 3 autonomous driving technology in the United States. Mercedes said its Drive Pilot autonomous driving system has been approved by the state of Nevada and is awaiting a formal certificate of compliance from the state, which is expected to happen within two weeks. It also filed an application in California, which is also expected to go through soon. Mercedes’ Level 3 autonomous driving system can take over driving on suitable highway stretches and high-traffic areas, allowing the driver to do other things, such as watch a movie or attend a meeting. It also supports automatic lane changes to overtake slower vehicles.
