The number of stars visible to the naked eye is decreasing due to the increase in brightness at night. The researchers analyzed data from footage taken on cloudless and moonless nights by 51,351 Earth at Night project participants around the world between 2011 and 2022. The data came from 19,262 locations worldwide, including 3,699 locations in Europe and 9,488 locations in North America. Changes in the number of visible stars can be explained by increases in the brightness of the night sky, the study found. In Europe, they found that the brightness of the night sky increased by 6.5% per year; in North America, it was 10.4%. The brightness of the night sky increases by an average of 9.6% per year. At this rate, a child who is born seeing 250 stars will only see 100 by his 18th birthday.
