DoNews on January 22, according to the Wall Street Journal, Uber is working with automakers to design lower-cost electric vehicles for online ride-hailing and delivery businesses. This is part of Uber’s efforts to electrify its fleet.
On Thursday, Uber Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi said at an event that the company is working with manufacturers to develop vehicles optimized for urban use, transporting passengers and delivering goods. For ride-hailing, this includes passenger cars with lower top speeds where passengers can sit face-to-face.
Khosrowshahi noted that he does believe that the top speeds of many passenger cars are unnecessary for the urban driving associated with ride-hailing. “This reduces configuration, and if you reduce configuration, you reduce final cost.”
As for vans, Khosrowshahi said the company is considering smaller vehicles with two or three wheels and cargo space that can be more easily traversed.
