Human Lawyers Killed AI Lawyers

New York startup DoNotPay has come up with a way to use AI lawyers to defend drivers who receive traffic tickets in court. Here’s how it works: Defendants who receive speeding tickets wear smart glasses that record court proceedings while dictating responses into the defendant’s ear through a speaker. Its AI system is based on industry-leading AI text generation tools such as ChatGPT and DaVinci. The first AI lawyer trial was originally planned to be held in California on February 22, but it was canceled because DoNotPay received complaints and threats from human lawyers. DoNotPay founder Joshua Browder said that bar associations in several states in the United States have issued threats to him, saying that unauthorized practice of lawyers is a misdemeanor in some states and will face up to half a year in county jail. Browder said his firm is under investigation by several state bar associations, including the California Bar.
