During the Spring Festival holiday, I read Mr. Yu Qiuyu’s “Tao Te Ching” twice. Although Yu Qiuyu’s interpretation and translation of some chapters of the “Tao Te Ching” in the book are not very accurate, I still read the “Tao Te Ching” through various materials. several times.
I have to be impressed by Laozi’s profound thinking more than 2,500 years ago . This classic masterpiece can be said to be an insurmountable peak in the history of human thought, but it is a pity that later generations mixed too many fantasy interpretations in the process of interpreting this classic masterpiece, and finally produced Taoism with a strong religious color. This is not Lao Tzu’s original intention, and it is also a distortion of this philosophical work. This kind of fantasy interpretation is even more misleading to the thinking of later generations. Objectively speaking, the “Tao Te Ching” Paul Vientiane involves the science of the universe, the emancipation of the mind, the principles of life, and the learning methodology. Here I talk about my thoughts on investment, life, and scholarship.
1. Lao Tzu’s “Inaction” Thought and Buffett’s Way
The idea of ”inaction” is one of Lao Tzu’s core views. First of all, it needs to be clarified that Lao Tzu’s “inaction” does not mean lying down and doing nothing, but not acting recklessly. Discover and follow the law, let things grow naturally, and don’t do anything that violates the law.
In Chapter 37, Lao Tzu said, “Tao is always doing nothing and doing everything. If you keep it, all things will transform themselves.” That is to say, Tao is always doing nothing, but there is nothing that is not what it does. If you stick to it, discover and follow the objective laws, all things will Will be automated.
The same goes for investing. I think the title of the book “Buffett’s Way” translated by Mr. Yang Tiannan has the same meaning as the “Tao” mentioned by Lao Tzu. Balao seems to do nothing after buying a stock, but just watch it there, sometimes for more than ten years. Isn’t this “doing nothing”? But Balao also “does everything” through this kind of “doing nothing”. So Buffett’s core idea: buy excellent companies at a reasonable price and hold them for a long time. It is a vivid interpretation of Laozi’s “inaction” thought.
2. Lao Tzu’s philosophy of life—a good medicine to treat internal friction
Last year, “Second Uncle” cured many people’s internal friction. The real good medicine for curing mental internal friction is Lao Tzu’s “Tao Te Ching”. Because in addition to the thought of “doing nothing”, Lao Tzu also has “non-competition”, “contentment”, “not surprised by favor or humiliation” and so on. These are all the roots of modern people’s spiritual internal friction.
Laozi’s “indisputable” thought:
In the eighth chapter, “The highest goodness is like water. Water is good for all things without fighting for it. It is what everyone hates, so it is better than Tao.” This famous saying should be understood without translation.
Chapter 22 “If you don’t see yourself, you will be clear; if you don’t be self-righteous, you will show; if you don’t attack yourself, you will be meritorious; if you don’t be arrogant, you will grow; if you don’t fight, so the world can’t compete with it .” If you praise yourself, you can show your ability; if you don’t prove right and wrong, you can show right and wrong; if you don’t brag about yourself, you can show your achievements; No one can compete with it. ”
Lao Tzu’s thought of “contentment”:
Chapter Thirty-Third “Contentment is Rich”. No need to translate.
Chapter 46 “There is no disaster greater than not being satisfied, and there is no crime greater than desire. Therefore, contentment is always enough ” translated as ” There is no disaster greater than not knowing satisfaction, and there is no crime greater than greed. Therefore, contentment is eternal. satisfaction ” and so on.
Lao Tzu’s Thoughts of “Being Shocked by Favor or Humiliation”
Chapter Thirteen: “What does it mean to be flattered and humiliated? Favored as the next, as surprised as received, as surprised as lost, is called flattered and humiliated.” Lao Tzu believes that being favored is humble, and one feels pleasantly surprised when one is favored, and one panics when one loses one. disturbed. Therefore, in Lao Tzu’s view, neither favor nor humiliation should be taken seriously.
3. Lao Tzu’s Thoughts on Scholarly Research——No worries about learning without learning
It can be said that Lao Tzu’s thoughts on scholarship are very different from Confucianism, and have similarities with many great modern thinkers. For example, Russell said: People are born ignorant rather than stupid, and stupidity is caused by acquired education. That is to say, a person’s stupidity is often brought about by what you have learned.
Lao Tzu expounds a similar argument in Chapter 19:
Abandon sage and wisdom, and the people will gain a hundred times; abandon benevolence and righteousness, and the people will return to filial piety; These three are considered literary, not enough. Therefore, the order has its own affiliation; see simplicity and simplicity, less selfishness and few desires, no worries about learning.
The rough translation is: Do not advocate the so-called wisdom, benevolence and righteousness, and cleverness, so that the people can live a better life. Therefore, abandoning these studies of sage wisdom, benevolence and righteousness, and cleverness can be worry-free. Recalling that for thousands of years, Chinese feudal society has regarded “benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom and faith” as the main learning, which has indeed imprisoned people’s thinking and creativity.
And what does Lao Tzu advocate to learn?
In the sixty-fourth chapter, “Learning without learning, recovering from the faults of all people, to supplement the nature of all things without daring to act” is translated as “to learn what others do not learn, to remedy the mistakes that people often make, to follow the laws of nature in all things. development, without meddling”.
That is to say, Laozi advocates learning those knowledge that ancient Chinese society did not pay attention to, such as natural science, to better understand the laws of nature and act in accordance with the laws of nature. Isn’t this the earliest scientific thought?
Four. Summary
In short, many of Lao Tzu’s ideas are still very advanced even after more than 2,500 years. The “Tao Te Ching” is all-encompassing, and different groups of people can learn nutrients from it. Munger said: I am a practitioner of Confucianism in the United States. Then I want to say that the two wise men, Buffett and Munger, are unintentionally followers of Lao Tzu’s thinking.
