IT House reported on January 27 that SK On plans to expand its electric vehicle battery production capacity in South Korea to meet the growing demand of customer Hyundai Motor.
According to reports, Hyundai Motor has started construction of a new electric vehicle production facility in Ulsan. SK On plans to start investing in the Seosan factory this year and aims to start commercial production in 2024 to supply batteries for Hyundai Motor’s electric vehicles, the sources said.
SK On expects to spend about 500 billion won to expand Seosan’s current annual production capacity of 5GWh to 10GWh. IT House found that Hyundai’s Genesis G80, GV60 and GV70 are all using SK On batteries.
According to public information, SK On Seosan factory started producing batteries in September 2012, and broke through the production capacity of 5GWh in 2018. At the same time, SK On started building overseas facilities in China, Hungary, and the United States, and focused more on them than in South Korea. SK On will expand its production capacity to mainly produce batteries with a length of 300mm.
