Boeing delivered the 1,574th and final 747 to Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, which officially ceased production of the model. Just because the Boeing 747 is out of production doesn’t mean it’s going to disappear from the skies immediately, with the last planes delivered flying for decades. But the Boeing 747 is becoming increasingly rare on commercial flights. The first Boeing 747 was produced in 1968, first flew in 1969 and entered service in 1970. The Boeing 747 held the record for the world’s most passenger-carrying aircraft for 37 years before the Airbus A380 entered service. It is now being replaced by smaller, more efficient aircraft.
