The Golden Islands refer to the Hyères Islands on the French Côte d’azur. Today the painting is by the French artist Henri-Edmond Cross, known as the master of Neo-Impressionism. It is almost an abstract composition composed of several horizontal bands of color that differentiate beach, sea and sky from each other. Referring to Japanese printing techniques, especially ukiyo-e, Cross places the horizon high in the image, making the ocean the focal point of the composition. The light reflected on the surface of the sea, depicted with many golden brushstrokes, seems to be the main object.
I wish you a nice weekend!
P.S. Check out other French scenes! Seurat’s “Sunday on the Isle of the Grand Bowl” is the most famous Neo-Impressionist painting in the world. Come see what’s so special about it ! 🙂
