I don’t know if anyone has discovered that the last issue of Shiyue Weekly is on July 10th, and it hasn’t been updated for nearly two months.
A total of 30 issues have been updated. Although I only sorted out the reading for a week, there must be a certain amount of online reading every week and it takes two or three hours to sort out on weekends. There is some pressure to update. Thinking that Ruan Yifeng’s Tech Enthusiast Weekly has been written for five years, it’s amazing.
Originally, I planned to just cut it off silently, but after reading some good content, I still couldn’t help but save and share it. These contents are scattered in Shiyue bookmarks , Shiyue Weibo , and personal Obsidian notes. I still feel the need to organize these contents properly, so I decided to continue writing this newsletter. In addition, 7 new email subscribers were added in August, which also makes me want to continue to update. But change the frequency from weekly to monthly.
For any matter, setting up the timeline is a burden, so we can only “fight” for monthly updates. On the contrary, aimless updates last longer. For example, this blog has been written for more than 8 years without KPI.
Finally, in terms of content, I started reading magazines, so I will share some excerpts from magazines.

☆ [English] The Illusion of Knowledge
Discussing the macro forecast in investment, the conclusion of the full text is that the macro is unpredictable. The core logic behind it is very similar to Hayek’s following two articles: too many variables. (Shared in issue 29 )
☆ 【English】Artificial intelligence generated content is not protected by copyright
Human authorship is a basic requirement. The Copyright Office confirms that most works generated by AI are not subject to copyright protection, but clarifies that AI-assisted material is eligible for protection in certain circumstances. Claims for AI-created works can support copyright claims if humans select or arrange them in a “sufficiently creative manner” such that the resulting work constitutes an original work, the statement said. [This is similar to a camera. Taking pictures is already very intelligent, but people are still deeply controlled]
The New Yorker has a lengthy report on Musk. I know that Musk’s influence is very large, but I didn’t expect that because of the two projects SpaceX and Starlink, its political and even military influence is also so large.
Because of the particularity of his industry, especially SpaceX and Starlink, both are very basic industries and are unique in the current market, so that government officials have to seek Musk’s opinions when doing many things.
He responded immediately: “In some ways.” Reed Hoffman told me that Musk’s attitude was “like Louis XIV: ‘L’état, c’est moi.'”
The last meaning is: I am the country.
☆ 【English】What happened in 2012?
The author lays out a plethora of data charts that show that 2012 was a turning point, such as teens getting less sleep, more arguments, fewer births, fewer entertainment industry original shows, and lower grade point averages for students. Worse and so on.
And all of this corresponds to the penetration rate of smartphones in 2012, which was more than half, and then completely popularized.
At the same time, the author compares all this with the United States in the 1970s. Looking at the message, someone mentioned that the 1970s happened to be the time when the penetration rate of television in the United States exceeded half.
☆ I would like to use this article to commemorate the father in “Four Springs”
A scene in the film is often mentioned repeatedly by the audience. In the spring, my father was pleasantly surprised to find that “the swallows are coming again.” My mother said, “I told your father to be less happy. When these swallows leave, I will feel depressed for a few days.”
☆ 【English】How to learn better in the digital age
Mentioning some reasons in brain science, in terms of operation, the emphasis is still on initiative, and only resistance can be absorbed. Passive “swiping” is entertainment.

So true, so am I.
☆ 【English】Rise of Worse Is Better
The article written by Richard P. Gabriel in 1991 should be an earlier source of worse is better in the computer field. The article talks about the concepts of lisp and c language. The former pursues completeness, correctness and usability, while the latter pursues simplicity and usability.
Patrick Collison (Stripe founder) collected some examples of projects in history that went from planning to execution very quickly. Later, I also mentioned some analysis data that the construction in the United States is very slow now.
“The human events that always make a country a hell on earth are precisely the people who try to turn it into a paradise.” The result has caused great tragedy to the country and nation and even countless individuals.
In reflections on the 20th anniversary of PowerPoint’s launch, Gaskins admitted that “more business and academic presentations look like poor attempts at sales presentations,” a phenomenon he blamed on “a general failure of taste,” as well as Blame it on PowerPoint itself. This tool is so powerful it destroys all pre-existing contexts. Not everything is a sales presentation; nor should it be.

☆ 81. New Opportunities for “Sleep Environment” – Crazy Vote
The guest of this issue is the co-founder of Liaidao brand.
Lying Island is a sleep brand, and currently it mainly produces home textile products, pillows, four-piece sets and the like. Long-term planning is everything in the bedroom, and it can be involved. Its slogan is “Come to lie on the island and just sleep.” Home textile is a very traditional industry, but it is very interesting to start from the scene of “sleep”, and when I listened to it, after understanding it, I was moved by its brand concept and the problems the brand wanted to solve.
Chinese is the only pictographic script still in use. In the process of mechanization and informatization, there are many difficulties.
☆ Will the future of mankind be in Europe? – Out of season
In the matter of volume, China and the United States are actually very similar. Europe is different from America.
Talking about the life of Europeans, Yang Zhao has a point of view that impressed me deeply: live according to ideas, not according to feelings. I understand it as the unity of knowledge and action. For example, if you know that junk food is unhealthy, eat less, and don’t eat it just because it tastes good.
But this is still related to personal interests. What’s more rare is that it is not directly related to personal interests, but is related to the fate of all mankind, such as protecting the environment, Germany canceled nuclear power, and now because of the Russia-Ukraine war, many people in China Netizens made fun of it. But Germans are willing to put up with such high cost and inconvenience because it helps the environment. In other words, without sacrificing the environment for convenience. This angle is very interesting. I don’t live in Germany, so maybe not everyone thinks this way, but there must be quite a few people who are really enduring some inconvenience, just to protect the environment and do their part.
