Preface #
In September, my father had a re-examination. Although it was not satisfactory, the current situation may be as the “best condition” as the doctor said. After this “boot” landed, I started preparing my resume and looking for opportunities to work outside the home – it was time to end this half-year of remote work.
Because of this, I came across a very high-quality blog: http://daichuanqing.com/ . The blog has been continuously updated since 2008, and the topics mainly focus on design and products. In it, you can see the design thinking of many early mobile Internet products. Although more than ten years have passed, many contents are not outdated. On the contrary, many of today’s designs are inherited from that time. I especially like reading articles and magazines about the early Internet. It feels like a treasure hunt. In a few days, I have read almost all the blog posts, and I have benefited a lot. Readers who are interested in products and design may wish to go shopping.
The most interesting book I read in September was “The Book of Deception”. You can read it as a storybook or as a material for understanding the society of the Ming Dynasty. A few short stories every day, while passing the time, can also enhance the awareness of fraud prevention…
The following is spiritual food for September.
“Simple Rules” #
The first half was pretty good and quite inspiring, but the second half started to make me a little confused and the text felt a little off topic. The author may be a master, but he is really not a good author. He often wanders off to other topics while writing, which is very verbose. Although verbosity is a common problem among foreigners when writing books, such a small book is not big enough. Part of it is bullshit, which is so disappointing.
Let me talk about two principles that I think are more useful: SHE: shrink, hide and embody; SLIP: sort, label, integrate and prioritize. SHE comes from “Rule 1: Simplify”. In summary, it means minimizing non-core functions, hiding those infrequently used buttons, and giving more meaning to the design in other ways. For example, the advertising spokesperson is another meaning of the advertisement. SLIP comes from “Rule 2: Organize”, which applies not only to design, but also to the organization of our daily lives.
“Details determine the success or failure of interaction design” #
This book is very similar to the “Design Book for Everyone” I read many years ago. It has a simple structure and strong operability. After reading it, I was very inspired. This also shows that I still need to strengthen my design skills.
Recently, I have been looking through many design cases from many years ago, and I find them quite interesting. Combining some common designs in life, certain design principles have been confirmed one by one. For example, the design of the SIM card is not a square quadrilateral, but has one corner cut off, which helps people easily identify how to place it. This is the design principle of “using limiting factors to prevent users from making mistakes.” That clipped corner is the limiting factor. On the other hand, the interface design of Micro USB/Mini USB is likely to have to be reversed every time it is plugged into a mobile phone – thank you for the great invention of USB-C…
Also, in some areas or special occasions, 1 is pronounced as yāo, 2 is pronounced as liǎng, and 7 is pronounced as guǎi. Those who have watched “The Murders on Guling Street” directed by Edward Yang should be familiar with 217 in the movie. This is based on the principle of “reducing confusion”, because the pronunciation of 1 and 7 both has ī, which is easy to confuse. In some situations, such as the tower commander of an airplane, if you hear it wrong, the consequences will be disastrous, so you will pronounce it this way. In some verification code or identification code scenarios, it is rare to see numbers such as 0, 1, 2, and 8, because they can also be confused with some letters, causing users to make mistakes when inputting.
“Roaring Life” #
It also seems to be the fringe, but in fact it is the story of the people around you. Compared with “How is Your Summer?” “, this one has a little more narrative skills.
In Jin Ae-ran’s story, it seems that men are weak and useless, while women are tough and strong. I don’t know if this is also a kind of prejudice.
“The Book of Deception” #
This is a compilation of stories about deception and prevention of deception in the Ming Dynasty. The book has 24 volumes and a total of 48 stories. Each story is a short story, organized into 24 categories. Most of the stories in the book are not fictional, but are based on rumors at the time. Therefore, they can be taken as a cross-section of Ming Dynasty society.
Although the whole book is in classical Chinese, it is not difficult to read. Anyone with a high school literacy in classical Chinese can basically understand it. Behind each story, there is a “note” from the author, which incisively points out the ingenuity of deception and reminds readers how to prevent deception. This is also a very worthwhile part to read.
After reading the whole book, I found that many of today’s deceptions existed in ancient times. They just changed the scene and the words, but the core is the same. I have to lament that liars have a “long history” of deception. A typical example is “fake horse taking off satin”, under the pretense of buying a horse, let the horse dealer go home with him to collect the money. During the process, the scammer went into the store to buy the satin, and left with an excuse because the store manager saw the two riding together and thought they were companions, so he I didn’t care, but the scammers were taking advantage of this, using the horse traffickers as hostages, which actually made it easier for them to defraud.
Except for some of these clever deceptions, most of them are preventable. The simple summary is: don’t be greedy for petty gains, don’t reveal your wealth when you go out, and keep a low profile to keep safe. The small gains here refer to: money, lust, reputation, etc. As long as you encounter something that is not in line with common sense, you can basically guard against most scammers by thinking that pie will not fall from the sky.
“Essays on Schopenhauer’s Aesthetics” #
This book was donated by netizen lcomplete . Previously, my knowledge of Schopenhauer was limited to his name and that he was a philosopher. After reading, I have a richer understanding of Schopenhauer, and I feel that he is an independent thinking philosopher with unique insights.
I benefited a lot from the chapters on thinking, reading, and writing in the book. Reading too much without thinking will make our spirit lose elasticity. A large amount of unorganized knowledge is not as good as a few words after careful consideration. He especially cares about true thoughts, which are not just picking up other people’s wisdom, but the result of his own in-depth thinking.
After reading this book, I think he is the true thinker he claims to be.
