I didn’t expect to post another post so soon, because Google has just launched the October 2023 Spam Update. Google Spam Update has been released several times, but I found that this blog has not yet written about it.
Google’s current algorithm updates are all in series, so I plan to write only one post for each series. When updates of the same series are released, I can just add a few updates to the same post. This makes it easier to see the context of changes at a glance, and it’s less troublesome.
This post is a Google spam update. Others include Google useful content updates and Google product review updates . I’ll post another core algorithm update summary post when I have time.
Google October 2023 spam update
Google’s official blog just announced the launch of October 2023 Spam Update on October 4th . The name “Spam Update” sounds a bit weird in Chinese, but apparently it actually refers to “anti-spam algorithm update”.
Google’s statement is that this spam detection system update will improve the quality of anti-spam in many languages and spam types.
Included languages are: Turkish, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Hindi, Chinese, etc.
Types of garbage include: hidden pages, hacked content, automatically generated content, and harvested content.
The update will take several weeks to go live.
Previous garbage algorithm updates
June 23 and June 28, 2021: For the first time, Google launched spam update in two phases, both completed within the same day. It’s not clear what type of spam it is targeting, but it should be targeting all types of spam on a large scale because this is the first time.
July 26, 2021: Link spam update (link spam update), cracking down on a wide range of low-quality and spam links, such as affiliate program links without nofollow tags, guest blog post links, etc., and other more spammy ones. In the strike range, such as PBN, etc. The way the algorithm handles these spam links is to invalidate them, which is not a penalty in nature, but it looks similar to a penalty effect on the affected website.
November 2021 spam update: Google advises affected websites to refer to Google’s quality guidelines.
Spam update in October 2022: affects all languages in the world, no other information is specified.
December 2022 spam update : This spam update is mainly aimed at spam links. Google uses SpamBrain to not only detect websites that buy links on a large scale, but also websites that pass links (that is, websites that sell links).
How to deal with junk updates
From the previous spam algorithm updates summarized above, we can see that the spam update series targets two types of spam: 1) pure spam content, 2) low-quality spam.
This is actually relatively easy to judge and deal with. The website knows whether the content is collected, so-called pseudo-original, or automatically generated. Just don’t lie to yourself.
You also know whether the link was purchased and posted everywhere. To put it simply, as long as it is not attracted, it is of low quality. I once wrote a sentence before: Only those links that you don’t know exist are high-quality links.
Don’t ask me how to deal with spam updates when websites post spam links and collect content. I can’t handle it.
In contrast, useful content updates are difficult to deal with. The standard of “useful” is relatively vague and difficult to define. And now Google’s “usefulness” extends to user experience. For company websites, this involves more departments. SEO cannot use numbers to demonstrate and convince others, how much impact improving user experience has on search traffic, and even what is a good user experience cannot be clarified, which is very difficult to do.
