How to switch to a unique rolling distribution – Debian sid

Original link: https://www.insidentally.com/articles/000027/

Debian sid is not actually an official distribution in the strict sense, it is more like a rolling development version of the Debian distribution, containing the latest packages introduced into the Debian system. This version is generally used by some hardcore developers or testers. His software packages are new, and correspondingly these packages may be unstable.

install Debian

You can go to Debian’s official website to download the latest Debian installation image. For users in mainland China, you can also go to the mirror sources provided by various universities or large companies to download and install mirrors. Better mirror source download addresses are: Tsinghua University , University of Science and Technology of China, Tencent Cloud , and Alibaba Cloud .

You can install it according to the installation method on the official website .

Switch software sources

After installation, you will get a normal Debian system, you only need to modify the software source to convert the system to Debian sid system.

Modify the /etc/apt/sources.list file with administrator privileges. Delete all the contents of the file and modify it to:

 1
2
deb https://mirrors.tuna.tsinghua.edu.cn/debian/ sid main contrib non-free
# deb-src https://mirrors.tuna.tsinghua.edu.cn/debian/ sid main contrib non-free

Since the packages in sid are new enough, the three software sources updates , backports and security are not needed.

Then use the command:

 1
2
 # sudo apt update
# sudo apt upgrade

The system can be updated and converted to a Debian sid.

Points to Note

What needs to be known is that using Debian sid is actually participating in the development of Debian. This means that you should know everything about Linux, Debian, and the Debian packaging system, and you should have an interest in tracking down and fixing bugs.

Be careful every time you update, see what has been updated and what changes require manual maintenance.

It’s a good idea to keep a working live CD/USB handy to fix if something goes wrong with your system.

Back up your system from time to time so you can restore it if something goes wrong.

Use experience

I’ve been using the Debian sid on my Lenovo Xiaoxin pro 13 for a while now. Debian sid is nominally unstable, but it’s actually quite stable without major problems.

Debian sid’s packages are very new, but not as new as Arch Linux, nor as new as Fedora.

The new kernel has better support for new hardware, and the latest intel network card can also be directly driven, and you can enjoy the speed of wifi6.

Since Sid is a version that will never be released, there will be no major version upgrades in the future. It is actually a rolling release. Geeks of all kinds can try this unique rolling release below.
