Recently, I have a habit that I don’t think is a good habit. I often swipe short videos before going to bed. I often have a feeling of getting more and more energetic. The reason is that the intelligent algorithm of the system will continuously push me the content that I am interested in. This It’s an open secret.
And these short and small videos are indeed of good quality, causing the brain to not feel sleepy, just like a mint when you are sleepy, and you are refreshed. I actually wanted to take a look at it to get some sleep.
Inadvertently, I found that there is also an app on my phone, Kindle, which contains some books that I have not finished reading. So I opened it up before going to bed and started reading. In less than five minutes, drowsiness struck. This is exactly the feeling I want.
In contrast, the reason I think about it may be book reading, which requires more abstract and systematic thinking and brain power, which is very brain-burning. When the mental state is not good, the brain activates the self-protection mechanism, which makes sleepiness to put the brain to sleep.
But short videos, such fragmented content that even gorillas can watch, naturally do not need to think, not only do they not need to think, it also stimulates the brain to secrete dopamine, which makes it exciting, although the brain is already very tired—— So I have long ago believed that Douyin is a new type of drug .
I guess there should be similar studies in brain neuroscience to explain this phenomenon, which is not my particular concern. What I care about is to draw from this comparison, to keep my brain thinking, not to watch too many short videos, or to read more books and have a systematic and in-depth thinking ability, only then can I make myself better step.
Of course, I will still read books before going to bed in the future.
