Can the RISC-V architecture allow the Chinese core to overtake in corners and defeat intel, AMD, and Qualcomm?

For a long time, many people believe that RISC-V, a more open source and inclusive processor architecture, is the main direction for the development of domestic chips.

There are also netizens who insist that the RISC-V architecture can allow the Chinese chip industry to overtake the curve and defeat chip giants such as Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm.

Then the question arises, can the RISC-V architecture really allow the Chinese core to overtake in corners and defeat intel, AMD, and Qualcomm?

I think this question can be viewed from two aspects. The first aspect is whether RISC-V can overtake the Chinese core in corners, and the second question is, can it beat Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm?

In the first aspect, can RISC-V allow China’s chip industry to overtake the curve? I think it is possible.

Why do you say that? Because of the advantages of RISC-V, such as open source, simplification, and customizability, it has indeed brought huge development potential for the Chinese chip industry.

At present, among the 19 senior members of the RISC-V International Foundation, 12 are related to China, including Huawei, Alibaba, ZTE, UNISOC, as well as scientific research institutions such as the Institute of Computing Technology and the Institute of Software of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Typically, Alibaba Dharma Academy has released a series of RISC-V chips, IP, etc., showing great prospects in the fields of data centers, high-performance network communications, industrial applications, etc. This is the opportunity for China’s core to overtake in corners .

However, this is not for China to develop chips based on the RISC-V architecture to defeat Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm.

Chips need to be applied, and ultimately they must correspond to the ecology. Intel and AMD use the X86 architecture, which corresponds to the Windows ecosystem, and monopolizes the PC industry, while Qualcomm uses the ARM architecture, which corresponds to the Android ecosystem and monopolizes the mobile field.

The RISC-V architecture does not currently have an ecosystem. Even if the ecosystem is developed, it will be difficult to grab the X86 and ARM architecture markets in the PC field and mobile field.

The opportunities for the RISC-V architecture are still in the data centers, high-performance network communications, industrial applications, and the Internet of Things mentioned above.

Therefore, even if RISC-V ushered in a huge development, the best result is that RISC-V will divide the world with x86 and ARM in the future, rather than replace the X86 and ARM architecture.

Therefore, it is unrealistic to think that the development of the RISC-V architecture will enable the replacement of these chips without Intel, AMD’s CPU, or Qualcomm’s ARM chip in the future.
