About gun ban

After every shooting, there is a debate about whether guns should be banned. The perspectives and arguments of the discussion are the same every time. As an anarchist who pays attention to cultural discipline, I think that discussions about gun bans often overlook two aspects:

One is timing. The default logic of many people’s discussions is to say how guns pose a danger under the “status quo” of the current society. However, it does not mean that you are very happy at the moment . Guns are dangerous to you at the moment , so guns should be banned because of this. Just like a foreigner said about Shanghai during the epidemic:

I am usually very happy, I feel that I am not restricted, and even feel that I have participated in the construction and operation of social rules; however, when the epidemic comes and certain operations hit you…

The second is cultural influence. An environment where guns are allowed or prohibited will bring different ways of thinking to everyone in the environment in the long run? Will you be (forced) to rely more on the government because of this? Or are you more used to having things done by yourself? In fact, most of the precedents that can reach the US Supreme Court are not a direct statement on a certain matter. Do you support it? Should it be? Rather, it is largely about the trade-offs and balances between “individual rights, state rights, and federal government rights.”

To give an example that may not be appropriate: When accepting refugees from other regions will bring security problems to your happy life, the first thing you think of:

  • Is it to call on the government to strengthen the police force, after a period of suffering, to achieve a new round of public security investment and effect balance?
  • Or simply let the government keep these people out?
  • Or, it doesn’t matter, those bad guys can just crash with a gun?

And, in every previous disaster: earthquake, plane crash, etc., some people criticized: when the media reported the background story of each victim, it was a very inappropriate behavior to impress the audience. The victim has caring for his relatives, important life achievements, family responsibilities, a bright future… and the victim happens to be a villain full of evil, what is the difference between the severity of the disaster, accountability, and solutions?
