Academician Ni Guangnan said that Chinese chips should take the initiative on RISC-V, but Godson disagrees

On August 24, Academician Ni Guangnan said in his speech at the 2022 RISC-V China Summit: “At present, the mainstream CPU market is still monopolized by the X86 and ARM architectures, but the emerging open source instruction set RISC-V will provide new opportunities for the development of China’s chip industry. , if you seize the opportunity, it is possible to take the initiative in CPU core technology.” For a long time, RISC-V has been regarded by the outside world as a rival of x86/ARM, and can it take on this important task?

The emerging RISC-V has become the third largest chip architecture, with shipments of just over 10 billion before, but it is developing faster and is expected to achieve 60 billion shipments in 2025.

Jack Kang, an executive of SiFive, which provides RISC-V cores, said recently that China’s growing interest in RISC-V in recent years has stimulated the popularity of the architecture. By 2025, there will be more than 60 billion RISCs -V core integrated into physical IC.

Not only Chinese companies are interested in RISC-V, but semiconductor companies in Japan, India, and the United States are also actively developing RISC-V products, and the performance of RISC-V chips is getting stronger and stronger, and the systems and software that support it will also be more abundant. .

It is understood that RISC-V does not belong to any company. It is essentially an open standard. It is presented in the form of several manuals. Without corporate authorization, anyone in the world can download and develop their own RISC-V processors according to the manuals.

However, for RISC-V, Godson is not very recognized. In their view, the construction of the self-developed MIPS instruction system is relatively open, can control a certain degree of dominance, and has a certain foundation in the field of industrial control ecology.

As for RISC-V, Loongson believes that an independent ecosystem cannot be built based on RISC-V, and the ISC-V architecture has fewer instructions, which is more suitable for academic research and IoT applications.

Commercial information application products will need to add more instructions, and different instructions added by different companies will lead to ecological fragmentation. Therefore, to build an autonomous and controllable ecosystem must be based on an independently developed command system.
