Wang Fosong, a famous polymer chemist, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, former vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and former director of the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

According to the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Mr. Wang Fosong, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, former vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and former director of the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, died at 14:59 on December 31, 2022. Beijing passed away at the age of 89.
Mr. Wang Fosong is a famous polymer chemist in my country. He has been engaged in directional polymerization, rare earth catalysis and conductive polymer research for a long time and has achieved fruitful results; .
In 1984, he was awarded the title of the first batch of “young and middle-aged scientific and technological experts with outstanding contributions” by the State Council. One second prize of the National Natural Science Award (1991), two third prizes of the National Natural Science Award (1982, 1987), and other scientific and technological awards such as the International Award of the Polymer Society of Japan.
As a key member, he tackled the industrial production technology of butadiene rubber and successfully developed two catalytic systems of cobalt and nickel. He led the research and development of rare earth isoprene rubber, invented the rare earth catalyst for the directional polymerization of isoprene, and clarified the formation and catalytic mechanism of the active center.
He took the lead in the research and development of conductive polymers in China, broke through a series of technical difficulties in the mass production of polyaniline, and pushed polyaniline and its anti-corrosion coatings to industrialization. He carried out research on polymer-inorganic nanocomposites, established the theory of brittle-ductile transition of polymers, and successfully prepared super-tough reinforced polymer alloys for the first time.
Mr. Wang Fosong was born on May 23, 1933 in Xingning County (now Xingning City), Guangdong Province. He graduated from the Chemistry Department of Wuhan University in 1955. In the same year, he was assigned to work at the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Mr. Wang Fosong served as the director of the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences from 1985 to 1988, and the vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences from 1988 to 1994. He was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1991 (academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), and was elected as an academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences in 2002.
Mr. Wang Fosong used to be the director of the Department of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the director of the Applied Chemistry Committee of the Chinese Chemical Society and the director of the Polymer Discipline Committee, the vice chairman of the Chinese Petroleum Society, the vice chairman of the Chinese Materials Research Society, the chairman of the Pacific Polymer Federation, and the “Applied Chemistry” Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Chemistry.
