AI painting wins Colorado art competition

Art created by AI beats art created by humans. Artist Jason Allen’s submission “Théåtre D’opéra Spatial” won first place in the Digital Arts/Digitally Manipulated Photography category in an art competition in Colorado, USA. Allen used the commercial image compositing model Midjourney to generate a series of images, which were then enlarged and printed on canvas to submit to the competition. His victory sparked a lively debate about the nature of art and what an artist is. Some believe that the advent of AI will lead to the replacement of all human artists by machines, others believe that art will adapt and evolve with new technologies, such as music synthesizers.
