Americans are drowning in spam

Americans received an average of 42 spam text messages in March, according to data collected by RoboKiller, an app that blocks spam calls and text messages. Spammers like to send text messages because this form of spam has a high open rate and can easily send massive amounts of information while hiding identities. Besides text messages, other forms of spam are also on the rise. There were more spam calls in March than any month in the previous half year. From 2020 to 2021, spam increased by 30%. Data from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission shows a huge increase in social media scams, many of which are related to cryptocurrency investments. Experts blame the rapid growth of spam on increased reliance on digital communications during the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the Federal Trade Commission, text-messaging fraud in the United States will cost $131 million in 2021, an increase of more than 50% from the previous year.
