20 Hours in Japan is a talk show by Su Jing, the founder and editor-in-chief of “Knowing the Sun” and “Knowing the Middle”, on “Looking Ideal”. You can listen to it after downloading the Watching Ideal app. The program page is here .

The title of this issue is not what it appears on the page, but the place of sensual pleasures in Japanese culture. For those who like Wagyu beef, hot springs, and cherry blossom viewing, this topic may be meaningless (because it is nonsense), but Ozu Yasujiro fans, Noh fans, Yugen / Wabi-sabi / Shadow fans may feel the true meaning of Japanese culture Exactly the opposite of sensual pleasure. Using examples such as jazz appreciation, I try to illustrate that the emphasis on sensual pleasures is pervasive in Japanese culture, and I extend this to the topic of “physicality”. One of my own reasons for podcasting was to learn to speak , and how to speak is the realm of physicality.

The program mentioned the playing method of rubbing the inner surface of the drum with a cloth. For an example, see eight minutes and four seconds of this video. For the use of this tone in Showa Ballads, please listen to the one minute and twenty-seven seconds of this “Manchurian Beat”. (The original song was ” On the Hills of Manchuria ” written by Russian composer Ilya Shatrov in 1905 to commemorate the Russo-Japanese War.)

Also, I would have wished the clips were less tight and kept a little more crap.
