Beginning with macOS 13 Ventura, PostScript (.ps) and Encapsulated PostScript (.eps) files are no longer supported by the built-in Preview app on Macs, according to a new Apple support document. On macOS 13 Monterey and earlier, the built-in Preview application can still be used to open these files. Apple did not provide a reason for the change.
Apple recommends using other third-party Mac applications that can view or convert PostScript files . Apple says that on macOS 13 Ventura, you can still print .ps and .eps files by dragging them into the Mac printer queue by following the steps below.
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Printers & Scanners in the sidebar.
- Click the printer name on the right.
- Click the Printer Queue button to open the Printer Queue window.
- Drag the .ps or .eps file into the Printer Queue window.
Developed by Adobe in the 1980s, the .ps and .eps file formats were widely used for desktop publishing/printing purposes. PostScript was the basis for rendering on the NeXT operating system, and was mostly superseded by the PDF format in Mac OS X.
