Recently, the French National Frequency Authority, as a regulatory agency for the wireless communications industry, issued an announcement stating that it has recently tested a batch of mobile phones including Apple iPhone 12 to check whether the specific absorption rate of the mobile phones meets the standards. Test results show that the human body specific absorption rate of the iPhone 12 is 5.74 watts per kilogram, exceeding the EU’s upper limit of 4 watts per kilogram.
According to the requirements of the announcement, Apple must immediately take all necessary measures to suspend the sale of iPhone 12 mobile phones in France. For those iPhone 12 phones that have been sold, Apple must also take necessary corrective measures to make them comply with the requirements as soon as possible. Otherwise, the company will be ordered to recall the relevant phones. The French National Frequency Authority also stated that it will share iPhone 12 testing information with all EU member states.
The specific absorption rate reflects the level of radiation absorbed by the body when people are exposed to electromagnetic radiation. Many countries have stated that they are tracking France’s regulatory actions against Apple’s iPhone 12.
In response, Apple said in a statement that the iPhone 12 launched in 2020 has been certified by multiple international agencies and meets global radiation standards. Apple has provided multiple results from the company and third-party labs proving that the phone complies with France’s national frequency authority and is challenging the agency’s findings.
Relevant Apple staff stated that Apple disputes the review results of ANFR (French National Frequency Agency) and will continue to contact the authorities to prove its compliance.
Some communication industry professionals said that our country’s SAR standard is consistent with the French SAR standard (SAR value refers to the electromagnetic wave energy absorbed by biological tissue per unit time and unit mass). “It stands to reason that if it exceeds the standard in France, it will also exceed the standard in China. We should also test it.” According to China’s current “Local Exposure Limits for Mobile Phone Electromagnetic Radiation” regulations, any 10g of biological tissue, any continuous 6-minute average specific absorption Rate (SAR) value shall not exceed 2W/kg.
