Sina Digital News May 20 morning news, today, Apple issued an open letter, promising to improve the functions of Final Cut Pro film and television post-production software for the needs of professional users, and continue to promote this product.
This incident is actually a follow-up to an incident in April this year. In late April, a group of video editors wrote an open letter to Apple CEO Cook, accusing Apple of letting Final Cut Pro lag behind comparable editing tools and asking the company to step up efforts to make the software a professional film/TV production app to promote.
Today, Apple responded publicly. “The creative community has always been very important to us at Apple,” the letter said, promising to address “your requests for important features.” Apple also said it is adding new product training, expanding workshops and creating an expert advisory group.
Final Cut is a video post-production software developed by Apple. In the 2000s, it dominated independent and professional filmmaking. Apple’s major overhaul of the Final Cut Pro X version in 2011 was met with a lot of criticism.
The new version improves the state of the art in many ways, but also makes it from an industry professional software to a product more suitable for general users, professional users complain that it “cannot be used for professional work”. And competing products like Avid and Adobe Premiere took advantage of Apple’s missteps and won back a lot of market share.
Still, Apple is committed to Final Cut Pro X and has been quick to respond to early criticism with a slew of feature updates. While Final Cut Pro’s reputation in Hollywood is still somewhat sluggish, its penetration in independent video production markets such as YouTube is much higher.
The open letter in April addressed the adoption of the final cut in Hollywood film production. The letter complained that Apple’s apps didn’t work well with other production workflow tools, and while some of the underlying functionality had been addressed, Apple wasn’t doing enough to restore Final Cut Pro X’s reputation in the professional world. Many editors who wanted to use Final Cut were not allowed because they couldn’t get approval from producers and directors. (This is mostly a matter of industry standards and workflow dominance)
Apple’s feedback is a positive sign that establishing a panel of industry experts may help advise future development of the software to keep it up to speed with user needs.
