Ellis’ official website says: Ellis is the first bank account designed for international students – zero monthly fees, free international wire transfers, mobile banking, and tons of benefits.

The current Fintech companies introduce themselves like this: In order to better serve international students and new immigrants, they have launched a digital banking product that can be applied for without an SSN, such as Sable and Cheese small yellow cards. The results come and go quickly, and after a period of time, the service is stopped or the customer’s account is closed.

At present, Ellis mainly has three products: Ellis US bank account, Ellis US debit card, Ellis US phone card. The Ellis US calling card does not have any advantages, so I won’t introduce it here.

The download volume of Google Play is only 1k+, while the download volume of Sable is 100K+, and Cheese is 50K+. It is obviously still in its infancy, and the risk control should be relatively loose. Play cards as early as possible, of course, also need to be cautious. Speaking of using American cards in China, it is much more convenient to have an American address and ITIN. Ellis is picky about the network, and a US IP is a must, and a slow speed will affect the application experience.

The application process is as follows:

Apply with an ITIN

Select I have a Social Security Number in the following interface, as shown in the figure:

Enter the ITIN on the SSN input interface, then enter the US address, and then submit the application after confirming that the information is correct. If you have applied for a Capital One or CITI credit card using ITIN and reported your credit history, it can usually be approved in seconds. If there is no second batch, you need to upload supplementary materials. As shown in the picture:

After the batch number, you can see the checking account and virtual card immediately, as shown in the figure:

The card number of the virtual card is 418515, which is a debit card. Cash withdrawal from PayPal can arrive in the account in seconds. Use this method to recharge Ellis, no need to wait, and the handling fee is 1.75%.

Ellis, who applied earlier, issued a virtual card with the header 414447, which is the same as ENZO.

Ellis supports US domestic transfers and international wire transfers. The US domestic transfers use the checking account of Blue Ridge Bank NA, as shown in the figure:

The international wire transfer uses a British account, and the payee is in the customer’s own name instead of a third-party organization. It is easier to transfer money from China.

If you need to withdraw cash, you can apply for a physical card. Withdraw money at ATMs within the Allpoint network without any fees. Support ApplePay, GooglePay and Venmo functions.

Apply using a passport photo

You can use a Chinese passport to apply, first enter the passport number, and then select the country that issued the passport, as shown in the figure:

Next, Ellis will let you choose the school that will send you the I-20. We will directly choose I am not a student, as shown in the figure:

Then enter the US address, then upload the passport and proof of address, and wait for approval. There are several types of proof of address:

  2. DS-2019 Form
  3. Lease Agreement
  4. Utility Bill
  5. Pay Stub

For Chinese renting an address in the US, these things are hard to come by. You can try to use another bank statement or EIN confirmation letter instead.

Free is probably Ellis’ biggest advantage. As for the US bank account and the use of virtual cards and debit cards, you guys have played more tricks, so I won’t make a fuss about it.
