ATAR

@whigzhou: Looking through the local newspapers, I found that the city’s high school publishes the list of students with ATAR scores above 90 in the newspaper before the annual university admissions season. It’s part of their admissions advertisement, which I suspect only the good middle schools advertise,

The ATAR score is actually a percentile, which refers to the state percentile of the student’s grades in the state’s secondary school graduation examination, accurate to two decimal places, so a score above 90 is the top 10% in the state.

The calculation base for this percentile is the number of students who are eligible to take the graduation examination, many of whom do not take it, so the median ATAR is usually around 70, not 50,

Those whose ATAR is equal to or lower than 30 will only show 30 or less on their transcripts without any specific value. I guess there is no chance of being admitted to a university with an ATAR of less than 30, so it is not too embarrassing.

I saw that last year in that middle school, 21% of the students scored above 90, 40% scored above 80, and the number one was 99.2, entering the Top 1%.

Interestingly, there is a place name under the profile photo on the list besides the name. I don’t know if it’s the student’s family location or the primary school location. I checked carefully and all of them are within 200 kilometers. There are only two exceptions, which are Shanghai. of,
