We continue to celebrate Women’s History Month with Uemura Shoen, a Japanese painter best known for his ukiyo-e paintings of beautiful people ( bijinga ). She is reported to have said: “I have never drawn women with the feeling that they should only be ‘beautiful’. My desire is to draw jewel-like, clear, refined, refined figures free from vulgar elements .”

Matsumoto, who died in 1949, was unusual at the time for a woman working in a male-dominated field. Being a female “outsider” allowed her to gain a deeper understanding of her female models and take a different approach to their depiction than male artists – which enhanced her paintings because she didn’t just portray women through the lens of the male gaze The created objects also portray them as subjects of thought and emotion, inviting us to appreciate their inner beauty and outer appeal.

Songyuan strives to represent female beauty in what she believes to be its purest form, and her paintings are characterized by tactile lightness and emotional depth. Just like today’s painting, there is a beautiful Japanese woman reading a book intently.
