Concorde, the world’s first supersonic airliner, was decommissioned 18 years ago as an engineering feat but never profitable. Startup Boom Supersonic is trying to change that. The company’s planned supersonic airliner, Overture, is modeled using software, built from ultra-light materials and uses ultra-efficient engines. This week the company revealed Overture’s Symphony engine, designed and consulted by Florida Turbine Technologies, GE Additive and StandardAero, a mid-bypass, twin-rotor, non-afterburner turbofan engine with takeoff thrust 35,000 pounds, the intake and exhaust are specially designed for supersonic flight, which can reduce noise. The engine is expected to be put into production in 2024, tested in 2026, first flight in 2027, and if all goes well, enter service in 2029.
