“Broadway Cathedral” captures the magical atmosphere of a neon-lit theater with movies and live performances. As America entered the Great Depression, many Americans relied on the entertainment industry to escape reality. Here New York Mayor Jimmy Walker throws the first pitch of the baseball season in a movie newsreel. An elaborate stage show takes place below the screen, while the theater’s name glows around the central stage arches. Florine Stettheimer, American modernist painter, feminist, theater designer, poet, salon woman. She sheds more light on the harsh conditions faced by many New Yorkers in the 1930s.
I must admit that Stettheimer’s work was one of my best discoveries this year. I hope you enjoy her art too! To be honest, I love it so much that one of Steitheimer’s work is included in the ” 50 Women Artists Postcard Set “.
