The work we show today was created by the Ottoman calligrapher Abd al-Qadir Hisari, who was active in 1766 and 1767. The Ottoman galleon pictured is made up of the names of the seven sleepers of Ephesus mentioned in the Qur’an, while the tiny inscriptions that make up most of the rest of the image are Ottoman Turkish poems, prayers and the Qur’an A combination of verses in . The hull of this sailboat consists of the names of seven sleepers and their dogs. The story of the Seven Sleepers originates from pre-Islamic Christianity and is about a group of people who, under the protection of God, slept in caves for centuries from religious persecution. Both hadiths (quotes from the Prophet) and tafsir (comments on the Qur’an) indicate that these verses in the Qur’an have a protective nature. The names of the Seven Sleepers are often used on amulets, as they are believed to protect ships from sinking.
