News from IT House on January 20, the Computer History Museum, headquartered in Mountain View, California, USA, today released all source code, including system and application software, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of the Apple Lisa.

IT Home Small Classroom: The Apple Lisa system was released on January 19, 1983. It was only for commercial users at the place of release, and the listed price was close to 10,000 US dollars.

Such a high price, software/floppy issues, and many other issues made the Apple Lisa commercially unsuccessful. The Apple Lisa system was replaced two years later by the more affordable Apple Macintosh and Lisa 2, though the Apple Lisa was known for its innovative use of a graphical user interface (GUI).

The Apple Lisa had built-in processing tools such as text, spreadsheets, and charts, and the GUI was inspired by Xerox PARC’s Smalltalk system, but its own innovations eventually inspired Apple’s future operating system, as well as Microsoft’s Windows software.

The Computer History Museum is hosting an exhibit titled “Art of Code,” which features important codes that drove major developments in computing. Relevant award ceremony activities will be held simultaneously online/offline at 7:00 pm Pacific time on January 31st.
