Giovanna Garzoni was an Italian painter of the Baroque period, specializing in still lifes and miniatures. She was also one of the most accomplished botanical artists of the 17th century. Her first job at age 16 is said to be a herbarium pharmacist. Today we present a still life painting she perfected – gouache on vellum, which is characterized by vibrant colors that convey nuances of texture and texture. Galzoni carefully creates her paintings, often with a strong sense of decoration, and featuring a fascinating mix of local flora and fauna, with exotic additions, indirect expressions of the wealth of her Medici patrons and gardening skills.

This work is very beautiful, isn’t it?

Giovanna Galzoni is also in our list of 50 Postcards by Women Artists ; you’ll love these pieces. 🙂

Side note: There were more female Baroque painters than you might think. Meet Marietta Robusti , the brilliant daughter of the famous artist Jacopo Tintoretto.
