Guo Ke’s team, a researcher at the Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, found the tallest tree in China so far in the virgin forest of Huangguo fir in Yunnan during an inspection in Chayu County, Tibet. After repeated measurements by the drone sling, the tree is 83.2 meters high and 207 cm in diameter at breast height, which is higher than the previously reported Bhutan pine in Tibet (76.8 meters) and Taiwan fir (81-82 meters) in Taiwan, China. It broke the record for the tallest tree in China. The researchers said that the reason why the region can retain such a tall and intact virgin forest is due to the superior climatic and topographic conditions, as well as little human disturbance. The large number of tall trees and their communities and ecosystems here have important scientific research value and protection significance.
