On January 20, Guangzhou’s GDP was finally released – 2883.900 billion yuan.
This figure is slightly lower than the 2,912.903 billion yuan disclosed by Chongqing on the previous day. The GDP difference between the two cities is 29.003 billion yuan, and Chongqing’s economic aggregate has surpassed that of Guangzhou for the first time.
Chongqing’s GDP surpasses that of Guangzhou for the first time
According to the unified accounting results of the GDP of Guangdong Province, in 2022, the GDP of Guangzhou City will be 2,883.900 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 1.0%.
Chongqing’s economy is growing rapidly. On January 13, Hu Henghua, the mayor of Chongqing, said in his government work report that in the past five years, the city’s GDP is expected to increase from 2.01 trillion yuan in 2017 to more than 2.9 trillion yuan.

On January 19, the press conference on Chongqing’s economic operation in 2022 disclosed that the GDP for the whole year of 2022 will be 2,912.903 billion yuan, an increase of 2.6% over the previous year; the per capita GDP will reach 90,663 yuan, a year-on-year increase of 2.5%.
In recent years, Guangzhou has frequently faced “challenges” from Chongqing, and the battle for the fourth GDP city has fallen into a stalemate. In 2021, the total GDP of Guangzhou will be 2.82 trillion yuan, ranking fourth in the GDP list of Chinese cities. The “top three” in the same period were Shanghai, Beijing, and Shenzhen, with GDPs of 4.32 trillion, 4.03 trillion, and 3.07 trillion yuan, respectively. In that year, Chongqing’s GDP was 2.79 trillion yuan, only 30 billion yuan behind Guangzhou, ranking fifth in the country.
According to data from the two statistical bureaus, in the first three quarters of 2022, Chongqing’s total GDP will be 2.08 trillion yuan, slightly higher than Guangzhou’s 2.07 trillion yuan, with a gap of only about 10 billion yuan.
However, it should be noted that the economic performance of the two cities is very different. First of all, since the land area of Chongqing is 9 times that of Guangzhou, the economic density of Guangzhou is obviously much higher than that of Chongqing.
Second, the tertiary industry in Guangzhou is more mature and developed. Statistics show that in 2022, the added value of Guangzhou’s tertiary industry will be 2,061.14 billion yuan; in the same period, the figure in Chongqing will be 1,542.312 billion yuan. The added value of Chongqing’s tertiary industry is less than 3/4 of that of Guangzhou.
Third, in 2022, the added value of Guangzhou’s primary industry will only be 31.831 billion yuan, while Chongqing’s will reach 201.205 billion yuan. It not only proves that Chongqing has the ability to supply more abundant agricultural products to the local market, but also shows that the overall urbanization rate of Chongqing is far behind that of Guangzhou.
The Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle performed well
From the perspective of the economic circle, the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle (hereinafter referred to as the “Chengdu Economic Circle”) will perform well in 2022. In addition to Chongqing’s GDP surpassing Guangzhou for the first time, Chengdu has also successfully entered the “Two Trillion Club”, second only to Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Guangzhou and Suzhou.

According to Sichuan Daily, Sheng Yi, a member of the Sichuan Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government Decision-Making Advisory Committee, said, “Chengdu’s economic aggregate has passed the 2 trillion yuan mark, and its significance is not only multiple, but also pivotal!” Subtle changes have taken place in China’s urban economic structure. Among the 7 cities with a GDP exceeding 2 trillion yuan, 1 is from the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, 2 from the Yangtze River Delta, 2 from the Pearl River Delta, and 2 from the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle. “This shows that the pattern of the four major national-level urban agglomerations in the southeast, the north, and the west has formed, and the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle has become the fourth pole of China’s economy. At the same time, the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle is under construction, The ‘dual-core’ leading pattern is further established.”
Three years ago, on January 3, 2020, the sixth meeting of the Central Finance and Economics Committee proposed to “promote the construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle”. In October 2021, the Party Central Committee and the State Council issued the “Planning Outline for the Construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle”. In the report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle was included in the major regional strategies of the country.
In 3 years, the construction of the “economic circle” has achieved remarkable results: in 2021, the GDP of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle of the two cities will reach 7.4 trillion yuan, with a growth rate of 8.5%. The average annual growth rate is 6.2%, which is 1.1 percentage points higher than that of the whole country. Chongqing, together with Sichuan, vigorously implemented 160 major projects such as the Chengdu-Chongqing Middle Line High-speed Railway, and introduced plans for technological innovation centers, financial centers, and ecological and environmental protection. close.
The cultural and tourism industry is an area of advantage shared by Chengdu and Chongqing. Judging from the recent Spring Festival consumption that has attracted the most attention, data released by tourism platforms show that the top ten popular destinations during the Spring Festival this year are Shanghai, Beijing, Sanya, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Kunming, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Haikou, the Chengdu-Chongqing region has become one of the most popular tourist destinations during the holidays.
