Questioning is a very important skill at work. How to ask questions is more important, and you should choose the appropriate questioning method according to the different objects. When reporting problems upward, we should choose Closed Question; and when passing problems downward, we need to use Open Question.

Closed Question refers to providing background information, listing possible solutions, and giving personal recommendations and reasons when reporting problems upwards. In this way, the superior can make a decision only by reading the problem description you provide. Since superiors usually have precious time, they like to make simple Yes Or No choices. If you just describe the problem in general, they may need to read, think, to understand the background and context of the problem, which does not reflect your value. The Closed Question can provide sufficient information to allow superiors to make decisions more efficiently.

In contrast, Open Question is suitable for passing down questions. In this case, we should give a clear goal and let the subordinates think and search for solutions by themselves. We don’t need to guide them hand in hand, it will consume a lot of our time and energy. We just need to tell them what needs to be achieved and let them explore suitable solutions on their own.

By choosing an appropriate questioning method, we can better communicate with superiors and subordinates, improve work efficiency, and at the same time demonstrate our professionalism and value.
