Maynard Dixon is an American artist whose work focuses primarily on depicting the American West. He loved the theme so much that he even claimed that “the spirit of the West sings in every soul”. From his first visit to Arizona and New Mexico in 1900 to his last summer in Utah in 1944, Dixon made 22 work trips from Montana to Mexico over the course of his career, which he firmly recorded. the barren landscapes and ancient communities he saw. The artist is committed to re-examining the skies, lands and people of the Southwest with a very fresh eye. Dixon became a master at portraying ancient people, but at the same time, he struggled with stereotypes. Indeed, the clouds we see today look like part of a beautiful sky.
Also interesting is Dixon’s most notable (and rarely recognized) contribution: the rust-red coloration of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge is an antidote to San Francisco’s gray weather. Not only did the artist lobbied for the claim with a painting published in the San Francisco Chronicle, he even wrote to bridge designer Irving Morrow in 1935, “If our bridges—especially the Golden Gate Bridge— —In order to present the wonder of the world that people expect, the bridge should be painted an eye-catching color.” He was right!
